Last minute gift ideas for women

In case anyone out there is desperate, I thought I'd rattle off a few ideas:

- of course, gift certificates to a favorite store, restaurant, music service, movie theatre, spa, etc.
- camera (small or large, depending on your budget)
- lipstick or lipgloss
- pajamas (luxe, soft, warm ones!)
- jewelry
- music in any form (whatever way the recipient likes - digital, vinyl, etc.)
- Hand lotion (women can ALWAYS use that)
- nice smelling, beautiful candle (think Pier 1, not Wal-Mart)
- Picture frame, preferably with a picture she'll love in it
- an IOU for something she wants or needs (i.e., fixing something on her car or around the house)
- Cookies if she's not a baker
- Supplies for one of her hobbies

I can probably think of a few more after I get some sleep!

Parting with vintage items

I am forcing my logical mind to triumph over my sentimental heart and therefore I'm selling some old things.  Most of it will be clothes, but I'm also selling an old make-up compact.  I've read that it's very rare and hard to find. It's from MAC's 2005 Sunshrine collection.  This was a great time in my life, when I lived in Southern California and life was good.  I'm tempted to hold onto it for that reason, but I tell myself that this compact doesn't really represent my life.  It's just a compact.

Unfortunately E Bay took the listing down because they said it was used cosmetics.  I had listed it in the category of collectibles, and had written the title to be just the compact for sale, but they pulled it anyhow.  So now I'm trying to decide if I should even bother listing it on E Bay or check out other sites like Etsy or Poshmark.  I'm also considering just asking people who have messaged me about it what they would offer.  If it becomes much more difficult I'll end up just keeping it.

A book for the MAC Cosmetics lover

If you have someone on your gift list who loves MAC cosmetics, this book might be the perfect gift. Miles of MAC is a new "coffee table" book for the cosmetics lover, especially for the MAC lover.  Specifically, it's photos from photo shoots that were conceived by Miles Aldridge and MAC, along with some narrative by various people associated with MAC.
Now I don't have to feel bad about throwing away some of the postcards that I got from MAC with promo pictures from the campaigns.  This book doesn't have all of the campaigns, but most of the more recent ones are here.
Miles of MAC is available at Amazon and BN.com, approximately 31.00.

Swatches from the MAC x Nasty Gal collaboration

As I mentioned last week, MAC and Nasty Gal collaborated on a small collection of 3 lipsticks and 1 nail polish.  I couldn't pass up Gunner, a rare blue-based purple lipstick in the matte formula.  Once I saw some friends swatches of Runner, I decided to give it a try as well.  It's described as a burgundy, and I have enough of those, but I find it's actually more red than most of my burgundies.  It's gorgeous.  Some other blogs said it was patchy after it was applied but I put it on my somewhat chapped lips and it went on smoothly and looked fine to me.  It did leave a stain on my lips after I drank and ate.  Last, even though Stunner is a pink-based red, and I do have a few of those already (Glam, MAC Red) I went ahead and ordered it last night, just to have all 3.  I'll post swatches of that one when I get it.
I have to say, this is my favorite release from MAC since the Matte Lip Collection in September.  They're beautiful colors, and Gunner is truly unique.  Gunner is, of course, already sold out, but Runner and Stunner are still available on MAC's web site and probably are still on Nasty Gal's site as well.  I expect Runner to be the next one to sell out, probably sometime in the next week, so if you want it, get it soon!

Runner

Runner, no primer or lip pencil

If you look close there are a few darker patches, but if I exfoliated, used primer, or used a lip pencil that wouldn't be an issue
And I had to make the trio complete and buy Stunner, even though I knew it would look similar to some of my other reds (like Glam from last spring's By Request collection).  And it does, but it's still gorgeous! And it's the only one that's still in stock.

Shop my closet and my vanity

Since I've been into fashion and make-up for most of my life, and since my weight has swung from low to high a few times in recent years, I find myself with A LOT of clothes that no longer fit and more make-up than I will likely ever use.  I also have an urge to purge. Therefore I'm trying to sell clothes and make-up on E bay.  I've always taken good care of my things so all of the clothes that I'm listing are in good shape. Most of them were work clothes (for office work), but I also have some never worn jeans and evening clothes and eventually I'll get some of my barely worn shoes listed.  The make up is mostly limited edition things that I bought a "back up" of so they're brand new.

If you're interested in checking anything out, my E bay shop is named A_Unique_Style.  Have you ever bought or sold clothes or make-up on E bay or another site? I'm curious how sites like Poshmark and Threadflip are for selling clothes.

MAC x Nasty Gal

Under the category of things that will probably sell out is this collection between web site Nasty Gal and MAC. It's a small collection - just 3 lipsticks and a nail polish. The lipsticks come in purple, red, and burgundy, and the nail polish is red.  Although they're not extremely unique in color, these colors are popular in winter, and these are all a matte texture.  Then there are the names - Runner (the burgundy), Stunner (the red) and Gunner (the purple).  I'm lemming for the red just because I love the name Stunner.
The lipsticks went on sale on Nasty Gal's site already, and will probably be up on MAC's site today (Thursday).  I don't think this one will be available in stores, so check it out online.

Cat nurse

It may seem that I've abandoned this blog, but I havent. My life has been taken over by cats. Namely, sick cats. I had been planning on adding topics to this blog anyhow. There's only so much that I can write about beauty, especially since I don't go out that often and therefore I don't wear make-up that often.
So, here's a little advice if you have a cat, especially if you live in an area with stray cats.  Get your cat vaccinated every 4 years, at least.  And if your cat stops eating, get it to a good vet.  The emphasis on GOOD.  Also, if your cat gets sick, pay attention to every detail of their behavior.  Here's why I say this.
There are 4 cats where I live, 2 males, two females.  The males go outside every day, the females go out occasionally.  They're older and more mellow. There are also 2 strays that come every day for food and sometimes shelter. One of the strays has been coming for almost a year, and he has always looked pretty healthy. Just recently he decided that we weren't scary and he wanted us to pet him. He now LOVES to be petted.  He purrs and he rubs against you and is the sweetest boy.  (Unless you're another cat. In that case look out, because he'll chase you.). The other stray has only been coming around for a month or so, and he was pretty sickly looking for awhile. His coat was scraggly, he was very thin, and one of his eyes is usually closed.  We discovered him when he came in our cat door and helped himself to our cat's food.  He doesn't want to be touched or to get too close to anyone, but he has no problem helping himself to the other cat's food or bed.
So, three weeks ago our oldest male cat started drooling everywhere, out of the blue. My Mom took him to the vet and they said he had an abscessed tooth. They gave him a shot of antibiotics and said to bring him back in 2 weeks.  That same day, the other indoor/outdoor male (my 4 year old, Max), and my girl Scully stopped eating. Max slept and slept, not wanting to do anything else, which is very odd for him. After a 2nd day of this I took both of them to the vet.  First I took Scully. She is a little over 17, so I worry about any change in her eating.  The vet looked her over and said she was dehydrated and seemed to be tender around her stomach. They gave me a treatment estimate, the low end of which was 745.00.  I went ahead and had them give her an antibiotic shot, a B12 shot, an anti-nausea shot, blood tests, urine tests, and fluids for the dehydration. They sent me home with more fluids to give her daily (I am proficient at giving cats subcutaneous fluids, having had a cat with kidney disease).  Later that day, I took little Max in.  I could see that he wanted to eat, but he'd get to the bowl and just look at it. The vet pried open his mouth and we both noticed a dark red ulcer on the middle of his tongue.  That explained a lot!  For him I was given another bag of fluids, antibiotics, pain medicine, and some special high calorie food for sick kitties.  The next day he was back to eating and much more active and in 2 more days he was totally fine.
Scully seemed better the night after her vet appointment.  She ate and seemed alert.  But the next day she was back to not eating. Another day went by and she didn't get any better. She wouldn't eat anything.  She also started drooling.  She'd hover over the water bowl constantly, rarely drinking, just dipping her chin in the water.  Finally I couldn't stand the worrying anymore.  In the wee hours of the morning I took her to a 24 hour animal hospital 45 minutes away.  I told them that I thought there was something wrong with her mouth.  The vet looked in it and said there was some tooth decay and the beginning of an abscess.  He also mentioned the possibility of a virus called the Calicivirus which is spread among cats very easily. They gave me antibiotics, pain medicine, and an appetite stimulant for her, and suggested that I talk to my regular vet about her teeth.  I asked if she should have an IV for nutrition, and he said that they only did that when a cat hadn't eaten for several WEEKS. He said a few days was nothing.  So I went home and gave her the medicine along with the fluids.  Fast forward a few days and she STILL wasn't eating. The drooling had finally stopped, but she hadn't eaten anything for 6 days.  I had done a lot of research online and it seemed like the Calicivirus was what all 3 cats had.  The symptoms fit to a T.  So why hadn't the first vet even mentioned it?  Um, because they were stupid.  I had also found sites that advised feeding your cat with a syringe if they wouldn't eat on their own.  I called my local vet to ask for more of the special food so that I could start syringe feeding that day.  When I went in to get it, the Dr. Gave me a long spiel about how I should bring Scully in for hospitalization or else she might die.  Gee, thanks for a) stating the obvious, and b) trying to scare me into spending another couple of hundred dollars. Seriously, the estimate was another 740.00.  I said that I needed to think about it, got my food and syringes, and went home feeling sick. I didn't have that kind of money but I also hated the thought of losing my sweet girl.
I began the fun process of feeding Scully with a syringe (very messy and no fun, since Scully hated it), but at least I was getting food into her.  After 2 days Scully started showing some interest in eating on her own, but she seemed to have such a hard time actually eating and swallowing the food.  I called a few other local vets and found one that could get me in that day.  This one was SO much better than my regular one.  He looked in her mouth and saw ulcers all over her tongue. He said he highly suspected that it was the Calicivirus, and asked if we wanted to test for it (we did and it came back positive). They gave her another antibiotic shot, an anti-inflammatory shot, and an anti-nausea shot. He advised me to continue doing what I was doing at home - giving her Subcutaneous fluids and syringe-feeding her.  I liked this guy and felt like I had finally found a decent Dr. for my sweetheart.

So it's been a week and Scully will eat on her own again, as long as it's tuna.  At this point I'll give her anything she wants. Some days she eats good, other days not much. I'm still giving her fluids and some days still doing the syringe feeding, and this week I've had to help her clean herself "there".  She seems to be weak in her back legs, so some days the litter box has been hard for her to stand in. She tries to go to the bathroom and falls down in the box. That upset me immensely, as I've never seen her so weak before.  She has also lost a lot of weight and is so very thin right now. It has been very hard to see this, and I've been struggling with how long to keep up hope that she will recover. The vet seems skeptical given her age. Some days I feel the same, and other days I feel like she will pull through.  It's been exhausting and very depressing.  This little girl has been through a lot with me, she's even moved cross-country with me twice. No matter how uncertain my life was, she was always a constant.
Right now I'm doing what the vet suggested and taking it one day at a time.  When she's not hiding under the bed, I cover her with fluffy blankets and pet her a lot. I try to stay in the moment and appreciate the good times that I have with her. This is what I would have done with my Dad if I had known that he was going to die when he did.  It's what I think we should all do with people and pets we love as well as all of the good things in our lives, big or small.  Who knew that seeing my cat eat would become such a joyous occasion? Don't take anything for granted, you never know when it will be gone.

MAC's Matte Lip collection

I am so behind on posts! I've been so busy with other things, like taming wild cats (more on that shortly) and Dr. appointments. But I had to share my beautiful new lippies. I love creamy lipsticks, but I'm beginning to like mattes more and more. I've been a fan of them ever since I first tried MAC's Ruby Woo.  It's the perfect "pin-up girl" red.   In the past year I've discovered a new reason to love the matte texture - it doesn't bleed outside of your lips. Something that only older women will appreciate.  So when I heard that MAC was doing a collection of matte lipsticks I typed it in my date book.
This collection has something for everyone as far as colors.  It has a bright pinky red, Damn Glamorous, an orange-red, La Vie En Rouge, a to die for raspberry wine, Fashion Revival (my absolute favorite, it's very similar in color to Rebel), a gorgeous peachy-mocha, Pander Me, a dark plum, Living Legend, a grayish-brown, Styled in Sepia, which looks much better than it sounds, and a very nice rose-pink, Nouvelle Vogue.  Heroine is also in this collection but it is a permanent lipstick, a nice purple that people went crazy for when it was first brought out as a limited edition lippie.
NONE of these are sold out online, which is amazing, and they're also available at select stores like Nordstrom's and Macy's.  I decided to try out Styled in Sepia, Pander Me, Fashion Revival, and Nouvelle Vogue. I absolutely love all 4 of them. Here are a few swatches, etc.

Fashion Revival is my absolute favorite of the bunch.  If you like MAC's Rebel, you'll love this color.

Fashion Revival, no liner or primer

Swatches of Styled in Sepia (top) and Fashion Revival (bottom)

Styled in Sepia, also no liners or primer used. On some people it may look more gray, but on me it's exactly like a sepia toned photo
I really, really like this lipstick. I don't have anything else like it.
Nouvelle Vogue

Nouvelle Vogue looks like just another pink, but it's got that rosy hue like Hoop had.

Pander Me, another interesting color
Mattes do tend to show dry, cracked lips, so if you're going to try this be sure to exfoliate your lips or apply a primer before the lipstick. Then you'll look fantastic!

MAC Viva Glam Rihanna 2

Are you a daring kind of girl or woman? If you are, you should pick up the new MAC Viva Glam Rihanna lipstick.  If you haven't seen it yet, the newest Viva Glam lipstick is probably the most unusual one yet.  It's described as a mauvey silver frost.  It looks more like a brown with silver frost.  In the right light I can see the mauve, but for the most part you can't.  It looks like a grey brown.  So, it's not for everyone, but I love it.  I have SO MANY pinks, reds, oranges, purples, and nudes.  This is something that I don't have, and because of that I like it.  I will admit frosts are getting a little harder for me to wear without a primer or lip liner because the frost finish can accentuate lip lines.  But I don't mind using lip liner.

The best way to change up the look of this, however, is to layer the gloss on top of the lipstick.  It looks fantastic!  I haven't seen this combo look bad on ANYONE.  The gloss itself is stunning, a gorgeous lilac with red frost (MAC describes it as a "cool mauve with red frost").  When you put the gloss on over the lipstick it changes it into a more purple, less brown shade that is uniquely beautiful.

And of course all of the proceeds from this go to helping people with HIV/AIDS and their loved ones.  That in itself was a reason for me to buy it.

Here are a few snaps I took of the lipstick and gloss.

Coming Soon -Fall fashion and make up collaborations and collections

Sept.  Scandal/Olivia Pope's wardrobe recreated with The Limited.
Big shawl collars, neutrals, whites, black. Sophisticated but tough clothes. What better way to celebrate the next season of Scandal! It's supposed to launch sometime this week, and be available until next May. I have a few things on my list...

Sept. 14   Target x Altuzzara
I looked at this online and was rather disappointed.  The only thing that I thought was unique was the golden-hued python dress.  Other dresses were nice and if I were working in an office right now I might buy 1 or 2.  I'm not interested enough to go to Target to look at it.

Sept. 26th,   Kohl's x Eli Tahari New York inspired
I looked at the preview online and I AM excited for this collection.  I love the shirts with the New York scenes/inspiration, and the pants and leggings look unique.  There are some nice dresses for work, and I ADORE the black flared skirt with the cityscape at the bottom.  I loved Catherine Malandrino's collab with Kohl's last fall, and this one looks equally good.  Plus Elie Tahari seems like a genuinely nice person.  Can't wait!!

Oct. 2nd, MAC & RHPS
If you liked The Rocky Horror Picture Show, this collection may be your thing.  I've seen it but it was a midnight showing with very few people, so we didn't get the crowd participation thing going.  So I'm neither here nor there with excitement about the movie.  Maybe that's why I'm not excited about this collection.  The packaging is just meh for me, it's the red lips with the movie title by them. To me it looks like they slapped a sticker on it.  There are lipsticks for this one, at least.  All are some shade of red, though.  There are also some gorgeous glitters and pigment, blushes, and nail polishes

Oct 2nd, MAC x Brooke Shields
Sophisticated packaging with a fairly large variety of products.  Specifically a huge neutral eye shadow palette.  Lipsticks in square gray tubes with orange accents.  If it weren't for The Matte lip collection, I would get something from this one. I'm also holding out for the cool black packaging of the Ultimate Collection.

Oct. 2nd, MAC The Ultimate Collection
Gorgeous lipsticks and powders in equally gorgeous black packaging.  Pricey but it will be perm, so no rush.  I've got my eye on several of these.

Oct. 9th, MAC The Matte Lip Collection
A variety of colors, from greige (gray beige) to dark purple to pinky-red.  And all are the beloved matte formula.  I've had my list made for weeks!

Mid-Oct., MAC x Nasty Gal
A smallish collection with three lipsticks. One red, one burgundy, and one purple.

November, MAC x Prabal Gurung
If you follow Prabal on IG you've probably already gotten some glimpses of these.  Beautiful gold packaging, lipsticks, bronzer...  High pricing to cover the cost of the nice packaging...  I'm undecided on this one.

MAC Heirloom Holiday Collection
I'm not sure of the date yet.  There was a great presentation for this during their fall employee updates. Think cameos, pearls, white, black, and samples of lipsticks, pressed pigments, regular pigments, Viva Glam I - VI, brushes, and probably more that I'm forgetting about.

MAC and the Simpsons (Marge, specifically)

As some of you know, MAC recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Simpsons.  (If you don't know what The Simpsons is, google Marge and Homer Simpson, or skip this post.)  I was as surprised as everyone else that there were no lipsticks for this one, and I have no idea why.  There were lip glosses, which are sold out on MAC and Nordstrom's U.S. web sites, so if you want one at regular price, I would check your local store.  People love the Red Blazer one, Grand Pumpkin (Orange), and Itchy, Scratchy and Sexy(purple).  There is also a yellow-green named Nacho Cheese Explosion that can be very useful to layer over lipsticks that you want to change the color of.

There were 2 blushes, a pink named Pink Sprinkles (which I'll be getting soon because I grabbed a restock before it sold out online), and a coral blush named Sideshow You that was online only and is sold out online also.

There are 2 eye shadow palettes that are still available.  Both contain 4 eye shadows, and like the blushes, they have a picture of Marge Simpson imprinted on them.  The first is That Trillion Dollar Look.  It contains a Lime Green, a Kelly Green, a dirty Olive Green, and a dark/blackened teak.  The other, which I bought, is Marge's Extra Ingredients.  It has a baby pink, a vibrant purple, a bright blue, and a deep navy blue.  It is a nice, good quality compact, which was nice.  Cartoon items can sometimes feel cheap and therefore look cheesy, but these are not.  The shadows are a nice quality from what I've heard.  I can't bring myself to use mine!

Here are a few pics of it.

Pink Sprinkles blush
There is also a set of false lashes and some nail art stickers.  You may not have many choices online, but I've heard that stores still have a lot of stock from this collection.  I'll add photos of Pink Sprinkles to this post when I receive it.

And if you like this kind of themed collection, get ready for a Rocky Horror Picture Show collection coming at the beginning of October.  I'll write a separate post about it and the other fall collections coming out soon.  There are a lot, so start saving your money!!

MAC's Artificially Wild - Nudes with an attitude

MAC debuted several new items and collections in stores this week.  They've repackaged their face and body foundation, something that I've yet to try but have heard good things about.  They released an homage to Marge Simpson (more on that in a separate post), and they also launched a small collection called "Artificially Wild", a bit of a throwback to the ninetie's nudes and browns (if you hadn't noticed, there's a lot of nineties redux happening).  At first glance, I thought I could easily skip this one.  Nudes? Earthtones? Ho-hum.  But instead of the usual suspects, these are neutrals with a little twist.

There are a few eyeshadows in shades other than just the usual beige and brown.  Artificial Earth is a mauve nude, Stony is a light concrete grey, Marsh is described as a "dirty olive green", and Natural Wilderness is mustard gold nude.  I'm most intrigued by Marsh, its a nice green for fall, and different from anything that I have.

The lipsticks attracted me the most (as is usually the case). Photo is described as a golden brown, which I'll have to go to the store to try on since I have a few browns already. The same goes for Yash and Siss.  No hurry, anyhow, since those are in the permanent line.  I had to try Shitake and Icon. Shitake is a glaze and Icon is a frost.  Both are sheer, so you can use 1 layer for a very natural look or apply several layers for more opaque coverage. Not surprisingly, I loved them both.

There are also 3 blushes, Pink Cult (a pink which seems to have a cult following), Next to Skin, a very pale beige which a lot of people love, and Taupe, which I decided to try.  I love the texture (Satin), the opacity is very good, and it's a nice beige.

There are also 4 lip glosses, which all look beautiful, but I have so many glosses that I made myself skip them.  There are also 3 Cream Color Bases, which are creams that you can use on cheeks or eyes.  Breaking Ground is an iridescent mauve, Shell is a beige-pink, and Au Nature is a mustard olive.  I was tempted to buy Breaking Ground but I have a few other of these and I rarely use them.

Overall, I like this collection much more than I expected.  It's perfect for fall, yet these are also neutrals that I can use year-round.

Should there be different rules for beauty after 40?

Recently I was in a bookstore looking through some books about beauty.  There were a few about beauty for women over 40, and I have to say I was disappointed with them.  So many of their "rules" were so stereotypical and in my opinion, outdated.  For instance, don't wear your hair long, don't wear any shade of eye shadow other than neutral shades, don't wear dark lipstick, don't line your entire eye, don't smudge shadow under your eye, and more that I can't remember.  I can understand some of these, for example, if your lips are thinning as you age, dark lipstick will make them look smaller.  And shadow smudged under your eyes could exacerbate dark circles or bags.  But those aren't concerns that apply only to women over 40.  You can have all of those things no matter what your age.
And what's up with the long hair thing? If you have nice hair, and it looks good long, you should wear it that way if you want to.  Possibly the worst rule, in my opinion, is the one about not wearing any color make up other than neutrals.  They suggested that that is the only way to look appropriately chic in middle age. WHY would that be the case? Purples and greens can look just as sophisticated and chic as taupe or brown, if you choose the right shades and apply them properly.  Women's eyes don't instantly get wrinkled and bad-looking after they turn 40.  I didn't notice any different in the skin around my eyes until around 49.  The only change so far is that the skin is not as taut.  That affects how I wear my eye liner, but that's about it.
If you're over 40, do you think you should adhere to rules like this about beauty? Have you changed the way you wear make-up or your hair because of your age?

I'm breaking the rules about hair length, eye liner, and lipstick color.  Do I care?

Have a Novel Romance with MAC

This collection is available in stores now!  Here are a few quick photos of the things that I've gotten so far.  In lipsticks I bought Good Kisser, which is my favorite, Yield to Love, and Lingering Kiss.  Good Kisser and Lingering Kiss are matte finishes, and Yield to Love is a Cremesheen.  Unfortunately, Yield to Love was an online exclusive, so you'll only get it if MAC restocks their web sites.  In my opinion, Good Kisser is the one to get from this collection.  It's gorgeous!  There are also 2 that I didn't buy, Heart's Aflame, a beautiful red-brown (which I already have so many of, that's the only reason that I didn't buy it), and A Novel Romance, a bright pink.  There are also several other lip glosses.  I have so many lip glosses that I'm trying to limit myself to ones that are unique for me.  Reckless Desire fit that bill and I'm very happy with it.

From L to R, Good Kisser, Yield to Love, Lingering Kiss, and Reckless Desire lipgloss

Lingering Kiss (no liner, just the lipstick)
In addition to the lippies, there are eye shadow quads that are quite beautiful.  If I could afford it I would have bought all of them.  This collection also ushers in a new product - the fluid line eye pencil.  They function like the technaKohl liners, but have the lasting finish of the fluid lines.  So far I've only tried Earthsign.  I LOVE that one! Its the perfect deep Espresso brown.  I can see myself picking up all of these eventually, because they're all beautiful.
There is also the return of the Electric Cool eye shadows, slightly creamy shadows that glide on and dry to a powder finish.  I had never tried these before, so I bought 3 of them:  Superwatt, which is taupe, Coil, a gorgeous copper, and Highly Charged, a purple blue.  So far I've only gotten to try Superwatt, but I love it.  Easy to swipe on your lid, build able, and a little sparkle but not too much.  I paired it with the Earthsign liner and it looked great.
I'll put up some pictures of the eye makeup in the next post.  So go get it, ladies, before things sell out!
